 Joss Whedon's "The Dollhouse"
|
I have really been enjoying this, Eliza Dushku plays Echo, a "doll" (A person who's mind is wiped clean leaving a basic personality and little to no awareness of events or people outside the local environment) who is programed for missions ordered by clients who can afford the service. Such missions include romance (enjoying the company of someone lost by way of death or separation), hostage negotiation, master thief and even detective.
With seemingly little chance for character development, the show falls back on the handlers/support crew/outsiders to advance the background story as more is learned about the Dollhouse...and the dolls may have their own agendas (Perhaps by way of a third party manipulating the system)
Interesting concept, though sadly as in the case of firefly, chances of a second season seem remote. Will certainly miss it when it goes. On the plus side, less to spend when it is finally released on DVD.

And Dollhouse gets greenlit for a second season (of 13 episodes)...yah.
Though ratings had fallen, Fox has decided to take a risk and go ahead.
Risk?
Well, to be fair, they have an inbuilt fanbase for both Joss and Eliza so that's one point in the shows favour, the second if their decision to release Dollhouse (in the USA) on DVD this July (the 28th) so based on the upswing in sales once the general public who may not have been otherwise aware of it at the time, Firefly gives one pause to think there is always a chance the same thing can happen for Dollhouse.
Release the DVD and see if that helps to increase rating for the second season (and in the process potentially adjust Fox's approach to which shows get canned)
There is also the possibility that Fox will lower the budget for the show (with key sets already in place) but then you have to wonder if Joss/Eliza have plans for a story that Fox may have viewed as a win/win option based on the upswing of interest in more escapist style entertainment as the whole Global Financial Crisis makes people seek entertainment in forms far removed from reality.
See how things go.
But yippee.
